Iranian Security Forces Arrest Arab Poet Jawad Konani in Ongoing Crackdown on Activists

Reports received by the Karoon Human Rights Organization indicate that Iranian security forces arrested Jawad Konani (known as Abu Alwan), an Arab poet and activist, in the early hours of Friday, October 30, as part of a continued crackdown on cultural and ideological activists.

According to information and reports obtained, the arrest of Jawad Konani (son of Kazem) took place in the “Shawour” area, which is part of the Khorramshahr County.

Initial inquiries to ascertain the status of this citizen have so far been unsuccessful, and there is no clear information regarding the reasons for his arrest, the detaining authority, the charges against him, or the exact location where this Ahwazi activist is being held.

The arrest of cultural activists, poets, and ideological figures in the Ahwaz region is a systematic and longstanding practice among intelligence agencies. Security forces consistently attempt to suppress any independent cultural and ideological activities in the area through pressure, fabricated cases, and arbitrary arrests, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

The Karoon Human Rights Organization expresses deep concern for the health and safety of Jawad Konani, deeming his arbitrary detention a clear violation of the right to freedom of expression and belief as outlined in international human rights documents. The organization calls for an end to the secrecy of security agencies, immediate clarification of his status, assurance of his access to a lawyer and family, and the unconditional release of this Ahwazi citizen.
