Severe Torture of 28-Year-Old Protester Youssef Hosseinian in IRGC Detention

Reports received by the Karoon Human Rights Organization indicate that Youssef Hosseinian (Nasseri), a 28-year-old protester from Shush, has been transferred to Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz due to a severe deterioration in his health caused by brutal torture in solitary confinement by the Iranian security forces (IRGC).

Informed sources have reported to the Karoon Human Rights Organization that IRGC interrogators subjected this young man to extreme physical and psychological pressure during his solitary confinement to force him to record coerced video confessions. According to these reports, the security interrogators explicitly threatened Youssef Hosseinian that if he opposed the pre-determined narrative and refused to deliver dictated confessions on camera, he would face a sentence of “two death penalties” in court.

The intensity of the torture aimed at breaking his resistance and obtaining these confessions has severely impacted his health, leading the security authorities to ultimately transfer him to Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz.

Youssef Hosseinian is one of the 12 detainees in the case known as “Qaleh Chanan,” which was initiated following a bloody raid by security forces in Esfand 1404 (March 2025). Recently, heavy charges such as “Moharebeh” (waging war against God) and “Baghi” (armed rebellion against the regime) have been added to the indictments, placing their lives in serious jeopardy. Like other detainees in this case, Youssef Hosseinian has been deprived of his most basic rights, including access to an independent and chosen lawyer, since the moment of his arrest.

Security agencies in the Ahwaz region are using prolonged solitary confinement, torture to the point of serious physical harm, and threats of heavy sentences to cover up their crimes in the Qaleh Chanan case and to advance their security narrative in court based on fabricated confessions.

The Karoon Human Rights Organization expresses deep concern for Youssef Hosseinian’s health and safety in Sheiban Prison and strongly condemns the systematic use of torture to the point of deteriorating the prisoner’s condition and threats of execution to extract “coerced confessions.” The organization calls on international bodies, human rights defenders, and the UN Special Rapporteur on Iran to intervene urgently and effectively to stop the torture machine, ensure access to immediate medical services, and prevent the issuance of death sentences based on confessions obtained under torture.
