Death Sentence Against Ahwazi Arab Civil Activist Hassan Musallawi Upheld and Officially Communicated at Sheyban Prison

According to reports received by the Karoon Human Rights Organization, the death sentence of Hassan Musallawi (Torfi), a 38-year-old Ahwazi Arab civil and cultural activist, was officially communicated to him at Sheyban Prison in Ahwaz in June 2026, following its confirmation by Iran’s Supreme Court. Musallawi, who has been in detention since 2022, received formal notification of his death sentence two years after it was initially issued.

According to informed sources, Hassan Musallawi, son of Ali, was arrested by security forces in 2022. In August 2023, Branch One of the Revolutionary Court in Ma’shour (Mahshahr), presided over by Judge Mehran Mehmannavaz, sentenced him to death in absentia.

He was charged with moharebeh (“enmity against God”) and “membership in Arab groups opposed to the Islamic Republic.” The sentence was upheld without modification by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court in March 2025, although its formal notification to the political prisoner was delayed until June 2026.

Hassan Musallawi, a resident of Musallawiyeh village in Mohammareh (Khorramshahr) County, had previously been detained. In 2019, he was arrested alongside several other cultural activists, and his case was heard by Branch 13 of the Ahwaz Revolutionary Court under Judge Mehdi Shahin.

Although the court set bail at 300 million tomans (approximately 6,000 USD) in the 2019 case, security authorities prevented his temporary release and kept him in detention for more than 10 months without resolution. The charges brought against him at that time included “propaganda against the state,” “insulting the Supreme Leader,” “forming and membership in an illegal organization with the intent to undermine national security,” and “participation in riots.”
