According to reports received by the Karoon Human Rights Organization, a prisoner held at Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz has died after being stabbed, amid inadequate security and insufficient oversight by prison authorities.
The prisoner was identified as “Khalaf Daghagheleh“, 31.
According to information received, Daghagheleh was attacked with a knife inside the prison ward and died as a result of the severity of his injuries.
Reports indicate that he had been arrested by security and law-enforcement authorities approximately six years ago and had remained imprisoned at Sheiban since then. No clear information is currently available regarding the precise circumstances of the altercation, the identity of the attacker or attackers, or the motive behind the killing.
Fatal altercations have previously occurred in prisons across Khuzestan Province, particularly at Sheiban Prison.
Insufficient oversight, failure to properly separate prisoners according to the nature of their offenses, severe overcrowding, and the presence of improvised bladed weapons inside prison wards have repeatedly placed prisoners’ lives at serious risk.
The Karoon Human Rights Organization expresses deep concern over the continuing insecurity in Ahwaz prisons and emphasizes that, under both international and domestic law, the Prisons Organization and the judiciary are responsible for protecting prisoners’ lives, safety, and health.
The organization calls for a transparent investigation, accountability for Sheiban Prison officials for this security failure, and clarification of the circumstances surrounding the killing of this prisoner.
