According to reports received by the Karun Human Rights Organization, Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz is facing severe health and psychological challenges due to extreme overcrowding and a lack of adequate sanitary and living space. The ward currently holds more than 113 political prisoners, far exceeding its capacity.
The report indicates that insufficient access to sunlight and the limited space available for outdoor exercise have led to widespread vitamin D deficiency, skin diseases, and significant psychological distress among prisoners.
The outdoor yard of Ward 5 measures only 6.5 by 13 meters, a space that is inadequate even for basic physical activity. Prisoners are unable to walk, exercise, or rest properly. Due to the yard’s lack of direct sunlight and the absence of suitable areas for drying clothes, inmates are forced to wear damp or semi-dry clothing, a condition that has contributed to the spread of skin infections and other health problems, symptoms of which have been observed among many detainees.
Despite being fully aware of these conditions, prison authorities’ attempts to transfer political prisoners from Ward 5 to a more suitable facility have reportedly been obstructed. According to the report, security forces and certain officials within the provincial prison administration have exerted pressure and created barriers, hindering efforts to alleviate the situation and improve detention conditions.
