Reports received by Karun Human Rights Organization indicate a complete water outage at Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz for the second consecutive day.
According to these reports, conditions inside the prison have reached a critical and alarming level. Prisoners remain entirely deprived of access to drinking water, sanitary water, and bathing facilities. This situation poses a serious threat to both physical and mental health and significantly increases the risk of a humanitarian disaster.
Informed sources told Karun Human Rights Organization that the continued water cutoff has led to a severe deterioration of hygiene conditions, an increase in skin and gastrointestinal diseases, the spread of foul odors throughout prison wards, and a rise in tension and psychological pressure among prisoners. Despite repeated protests by inmates, prison authorities have so far taken no effective measures to provide emergency water supplies or resolve the crisis.
Karun Human Rights Organization stresses that Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz, which holds more than 4,000 prisoners, has previously experienced repeated incidents of water and electricity outages, lack of basic facilities, inhumane detention conditions, and systematic punitive practices. The continuation of these conditions constitutes a clear violation of minimum human rights standards and international rules governing the treatment of prisoners.
Warning of the grave consequences of this ongoing situation, Karun Human Rights Organization calls for immediate action by the Prison Organization, the intervention of independent oversight bodies, and the guaranteed, continuous access of prisoners to safe water. The organization emphasizes that full responsibility for any physical harm or loss of life resulting from this crisis lies directly with the relevant authorities.
