Ahwazi Arab Citizen Killed in Jarahi After Being Shot by Police

Hakim Vahidi, an Ahwazi Arab citizen from Jarahi (Chamran), died in hospital after being shot during a pursuit by Iranian police forces.

According to local sources, Hakim Vahidi (Bani-Torof), a resident of Jarahi (Chamran) in the Ahwaz region (Khuzestan), was shot and seriously wounded by Iranian police forces on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, during a pursuit.

The citizen was reportedly shot by a police officer identified as Iman Sharifi, a resident of Khalifeh (Ramshir). Vahidi was transferred to hospital but died from the severity of his injuries on Thursday, September 18, 2025.

Uncertainty Surrounding the Shooting

To date, judicial and security authorities have provided no explanation regarding the reason for the pursuit, the circumstances of the shooting, or the grounds on which the citizen was targeted.

Under Iran’s 1994 law on the use of firearms by members of the armed forces in necessary circumstances, the use of firearms by officers is subject to specific legal conditions and regulations. Officers are required to act within the framework of the law and observe the principles of necessity and proportionality.

If the shooting and the reported circumstances of the incident are confirmed, an independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, the necessity of using firearms, and the responsibility of the officers involved would be among the key demands in this case.

Local sources have also alleged that Iman Sharifi, the officer identified in connection with the incident, had previously been known for engaging in unlawful conduct and accepting bribes from citizens.

These allegations have not been independently verified and require official investigation and further examination.

As of the publication of this report, no information has been released regarding an official response from the Iranian police or the judiciary to the incident.

The Karoon Human Rights Organization expresses its deep concern over the death of Hakim Vahidi and condemns the shooting that resulted in his death, as well as any unnecessary or disproportionate use of firearms against civilians. The organization calls for an immediate, independent and transparent investigation into the incident and for accountability from the authorities and officers involved.
