Ten Sunni Arab Citizens Arrested in Ahwaz by IRGC Intelligence

According to reports received by the Karoon Human Rights Organization, on Thursday, September 10, 2026, forces from the Intelligence Organization of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC Intelligence) raided the village of Aboudeh, located along the road connecting Hamidiyeh and Ahwaz, and arrested at least 10 Arab citizens, transferring them to an undisclosed location.

Informed sources told the Karoon Human Rights Organization that all 10 detainees are Sunni Muslims and that their arrests were religiously motivated and linked to their religious beliefs. The detainees, who are between 45 and 50 years old, were visiting a friend at his home in the village when security forces raided the residence.

As of the publication of this report, the identities of five of the detainees, all of whom are married and heads of their households, have been verified by the Karoon Human Rights Organization:

  1. Reza Sawari — married and father of three daughters; resident of the Shahrak area of Ahwaz.
  2. Khaled Ghorbawi — married and father of two sons; resident of the Shahrak area of Ahwaz.
  3. Jafar Cheldawi — married and father of three sons; resident of the Shahrak area of Ahwaz.
  4. Loghman Betrani — married and father of three sons; resident of the Shahrak area of Ahwaz.
  5. Kamal Betrani — married and father of three sons; resident of the Pardis area of Ahwaz.

The Karoon Human Rights Organization is continuing efforts to verify the identities of the five other citizens arrested during the raid.

To date, there is no reliable information regarding the whereabouts, exact place of detention, or health condition of these citizens following their transfer by IRGC Intelligence forces.

The arbitrary detention of Arab citizens on the basis of their religious beliefs and adherence to Sunni Islam constitutes a systematic practice that violates fundamental human rights and has been increasingly pursued in recent years by security institutions of the Islamic Republic in the Ahwaz region.
