“Shaker Bouri”, Dissident Satirist from Abadan, Sentenced to 13 Months and 20 Days in Prison

Shaker Bouri, a satirist and social media activist from Abadan, announced on Monday, September 7, 2026, in a video posted on his personal social media page, that he had been sentenced to 13 months and 20 days of imprisonment.

According to reports received by the Karoon Human Rights Organization and the video published by Shaker Bouri, the sentence was issued on charges of “disturbing public opinion through the dissemination of false information” following a complaint filed by Mousa Ghazanfariabadi, a member of the Iranian Parliament.

The case was filed with the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office of Bam County in Kerman Province.

Shaker Bouri had previously objected to the transfer of his case to the Bam court, stating that although he resides in Abadan, having his case heard in a city outside his place of residence had imposed significant travel expenses and additional judicial pressure on him.

Shaker Bouri had also previously been arrested on Monday, July 31, 2023, after visiting the IRGC Intelligence Department in Abadan to follow up on and seek the return of his confiscated mobile phone. He was arrested by agents of the security institution at the time.

The Karoon Human Rights Organization condemns the issuance of this sentence and stresses that imposing imprisonment in response to the peaceful expression of opinions and criticism is incompatible with the right to freedom of expression and the fundamental rights of citizens.

The organization calls for the annulment of the sentence and an end to judicial pressure against Shaker Bouri.
