According to reports received by the Karoun Human Rights Organization (KHRO), amid escalating regional tensions and an intense summer heatwave across the Ahwaz region (Khuzestan Province), Sheiban (Central) Prison in Ahwaz has been experiencing repeated daily power outages throughout the current month. The situation has placed approximately 4,000 prisoners under increasingly harsh and alarming conditions.
A family member of one of the political prisoners held in Sheiban Prison told KHRO that the prolonged electricity outages have repeatedly disabled the prison’s cooling systems, making detention conditions extremely difficult, particularly during the region’s extreme summer temperatures.
The family stressed that the ongoing outages pose a direct threat to prisoners’ health and called on judicial authorities and other relevant officials to take immediate action to address the deteriorating conditions inside Sheiban Prison.
According to the report, the repeated power cuts have also caused refrigerators inside the prison to stop functioning, resulting in the spoilage of stored food supplies. This comes at a time when many prisoners’ families, facing severe financial hardship, are unable to provide food for their imprisoned relatives. At the same time, the quality of meals provided by Sheiban Prison has reportedly been poor, with many prisoners describing the food as unfit for consumption.
The Karoun Human Rights Organization expressed deep concern over the health, welfare, and living conditions of prisoners in Sheiban Prison, condemning the repeated power outages and the inhumane conditions imposed on thousands of detainees. The organization called on Iran’s judicial and security authorities to take immediate measures to restore essential services, provide adequate facilities, and guarantee prisoners’ fundamental rights in accordance with international human rights standards.
