Mai Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, issued a statement on Monday, 29 September, warning about the alarming rise in executions carried out by the Islamic regime.
The statement reads: “I found the unprecedented wave of executions deeply shocking. In 2025, more than one thousand people have been executed in less than nine months. In recent weeks, with an average of more than nine hangings per day, it appears that Iran is carrying out executions on an industrial scale, which constitutes a serious violation of the right to life.”
At the same time, the statement notes that these figures are based on official announcements by the Islamic regime authorities and adds: “Due to the lack of transparency in Iran, the actual number is likely to be significantly higher.”
The statement also highlights the expansion of executions on charges of “espionage”: “Iran has also executed eleven people on espionage charges, nine of them after 13 June following the Israeli military offensive.”
The statement concludes with a strong call on the Islamic Republic of Iran to: “immediately establish an official suspension of all executions, provide data regarding death sentences and their implementation. The international community cannot remain silent in the face of such systematic violations of the right to life. States must take concrete diplomatic measures to pressure Iran to halt this wave of executions.”
