According to the Karun Human Rights Organization, Mokhtar Alboushoukeh, an Ahwazi Arab political prisoner sentenced to life imprisonment, is facing a new fabricated case. This case has been filed on the charge of “contact with political prisoners released from Sheiban Prison.” His six-month detention order, first issued in December 2024, was extended for the second time in April 2025.
Earlier, on Thursday, December 5, 2024, Alboushoukeh was transferred from Sheiban Central Prison to the Public Security Police Detention Center and subjected to severe physical and psychological torture. Since 2011, he has been imprisoned without a single day of furlough in Sheiban Prison and the former Karun Prison. He has recently been suffering from a hernia, and his health condition has been reported as critical.
Sources informed Karun that the new cases and repeated transfers are aimed at intensifying pressure on this political prisoner and restricting his communications. These pressures are not limited to Alboushoukeh himself; his family is also facing threats and intimidation to prevent them from offering support or pursuing legal action.
Alboushoukeh was transferred to the detention center following the arrest of Mustafa Halichi and Reza Hezbawi, two Ahwazi Arab poets and civil activists. After about a month of interrogation, these two cultural activists were transferred to Sheiban Prison. During their detention, they were also subjected to severe physical and psychological torture.
The Karun Organization, while condemning these actions, stresses that fabricating cases with vague charges, repeated extensions of detention, and pressure on families constitute blatant violations of prisoners’ rights and the principles of fair trial. The organization once again calls for the immediate halt of case fabrication against Mokhtar Alboushoukeh, guarantees for his and his family’s rights during imprisonment, and urges international human rights bodies to follow up on this case to prevent further violations of this political prisoner’s rights.
The situation of Mokhtar Alboushoukeh and the ongoing judicial and security pressures on him and his family once again highlight the urgent need for serious attention to the condition of political prisoners in Ahwaz prisons and across Iran.
