According to reports received by the Karun Human Rights Organization, Hassan Sawari, also known as Hussein (Abu Khaled), an Ahwazi Arab political prisoner, has been granted medical leave after serving six years in Ward 5 of Sheyban Prison in Ahwaz.
Hassan, who is married with two children and resides in the Hay al-Thawra district of Ahwaz, was arrested on December 1, 2018, following the armed attack on the military parade in Ahwaz. He was transferred to the detention center of the Ahwaz Intelligence Department. Tried in Branch 2 of the Ahwaz Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Mehdi Shahin, he was charged with “enmity against God (moharebeh) and membership in an opposition group.” He was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison, later reduced to 11 years and 6 months.
After the completion of interrogations, this political prisoner was transferred to Ward 5 of Sheyban Prison. Following the prisoners’ protests on March 31, 2020, he was moved to Ward 7, reportedly used as a quarantine section.
On April 1, 2024, the Karun Organization had previously raised concerns about Hassan’s health, as he suffers from diabetes. Human rights organizations have repeatedly called for urgent medical attention for Ahwazi Arab political prisoners in Sheyban Prison and highlighted their critical conditions.
Hassan’s recent medical leave comes at a time when the situation of political prisoners and human rights cases in Ahwaz remains a sensitive and challenging issue for human rights organizations.
