Images and reports published from the city of Fallahieh (Shadegan) in the Ahwaz region indicate that the family of “Mohammad Gharavi,” a young man who died after setting himself on fire last year amid severe economic hardship, has launched a strong protest and is seeking justice.
In a video released from a public gathering, the deceased’s brother, speaking in the presence of local officials and religious clerics, strongly criticises the existing situation and demands clear answers regarding the circumstances and factors that drove his brother to take such an action.
During this public appeal for justice, he refers to the fact that his brother’s children have been left orphaned and highlights the lack of adequate legal and social support. He questions what circumstances can drive a citizen to the point where death by fire is perceived as the only way out of an overwhelming crisis.
From a human-rights perspective, the increasing incidence of self-immolation among citizens, particularly in marginalised areas, reflects systemic pressures, deep-rooted socioeconomic crises, and the absence of effective mechanisms for fair justice and legal redress.
The failure of responsible institutions to safeguard human dignity and citizens’ right to life constitutes a clear violation of their fundamental rights.
The Karoon Human Rights Organization has expressed concern over the recurrence of such tragedies and stressed the need for independent investigations into the circumstances surrounding these deaths, as well as appropriate support and attention for the surviving family members of the victims.
