At dawn on Saturday, December 13, 2025, the death sentence of a prisoner was carried out at Dezful Prison, according to reports received by the Karun Human Rights Organization. The prisoner had previously been arrested on charges of murder and was sentenced to death by a criminal court.
According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the executed prisoner has been identified as Hamzeh Sarlak. Despite the implementation of the sentence, prison authorities and relevant official bodies have so far failed to issue any public or formal announcement regarding the execution.
Based on annual statistics published by the Statistics, Publications, and Documentation Center of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, at least 1,537 people were executed in Iranian prisons between October 10, 2024, and October 8, 2025—an increase of approximately 86.07% compared to the same period the previous year. However, only 5.86% of these executions were officially announced, underscoring the ongoing lack of transparency surrounding the use of the death penalty in Iran.
