According to reports received by the Karun Human Rights Organization, the health condition of Youssef Sawari, an Ahwazi Arab civil activist imprisoned in Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz, has sharply deteriorated since Tuesday, September 23.
In recent days, he has repeatedly suffered from severe asthma attacks, yet despite his critical condition, prison authorities have taken no action to provide him with medical treatment.
Youssef Sawari is a resident of Abou-Hamizeh village in Khafajieh, was arrested on November 8, 2018, by Ahwaz Intelligence on fabricated charges of collaboration with opposition groups. He was subjected to weeks of severe torture in the intelligence agency’s solitary confinement cells.
This Arab civil activist spent more than a year in Sheiban Prison, during which he endured intense psychological and physical pressure. Although he was later released on bail, the Ahwaz Revolutionary Court sentenced him to 10 years in prison — a ruling that human rights activists say reflects the regime’s ongoing policy of suppressing peaceful civil activities.
Human rights defenders have described these conditions as a deliberate denial of medical care for political prisoners and warned that the continuation of such practices could have irreversible consequences for the health of Youssef Sawari and other political prisoners in Ahwaz.
