According to reports received by the Karoun Human Rights Organization (KHRO), “Abdolimam Zaeri” an Arab Ahwazi political prisoner, was returned to Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz on Thursday, July 2, after approximately three months of medical leave, despite the fact that his treatment had not been completed and he continues to require specialized medical care.
According to the report, Zaeri underwent surgery during his medical furlough and spent a significant portion of that period hospitalized. However, despite ongoing medical needs and before completing his prescribed course of treatment, he was transferred back to prison.
KHRO had previously reported that several Arab Ahwazi political prisoners, including Zaeri, were granted temporary medical leave after posting bail of 10 billion tomans (approximately USD 11,000) each to receive treatment outside prison.
Abdolimam Zaeri was arrested by Iranian security forces during the widespread crackdown on Arab Ahwazi activists in 2005. According to reports, he was held in solitary confinement for several months and subjected to severe physical and psychological pressure aimed at extracting forced confessions. He was subsequently tried on security-related charges before a court that, according to human rights organizations, failed to meet even the minimum standards of a fair trial. Although he was initially sentenced to death, the sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.
