Prisoner Killed in Sheiban Prison, Ahwaz; Khalaf Daghaqleh Dies from Stab Wounds

Amid a lack of security and inadequate oversight by prison authorities, a prisoner at Sheiban Prison lost his life due to stab wounds.

According to reports received by the Karoon Human Rights Organization, the identity of the prisoner has been confirmed as Khalaf Daghaqleh, 31, son of Chasib.

Information indicates that this prisoner was attacked with a sharp weapon (knife) inside the ward and succumbed to his injuries due to their severity.

Reports suggest that Mr. Daghaqleh had been detained by security and law enforcement agencies for approximately six years and has been imprisoned in this facility since then. Details regarding the circumstances of the altercation, the identity of the assailant(s), and the motive behind this murder remain unclear.

Deadly altercations in prisons within the Ahwaz region (Khuzestan), particularly at Sheiban Prison, have a history of occurrence.

The lack of adequate oversight, failure to adhere to the principle of separation of crimes, high prison population density, and the presence of homemade sharp weapons within the wards have consistently posed serious threats to the safety of prisoners.

The Karoon Human Rights Organization expresses deep concern over the ongoing insecurity in Ahwaz’s prisons and reminds that, according to international and domestic laws, the responsibility for ensuring the life, safety, and health of prisoners lies with the prison organization and the judiciary.

This organization calls for a transparent investigation, accountability of the authorities at Sheiban Prison regarding this security lapse, and clarification of the hidden aspects surrounding the murder of this prisoner.
