Continued Heavy Fuel Oil Use at Ramin Power Plant Pollutes Ahwaz’s Air

Images and videos received from the Ramin Power Plant in northern Ahwaz reveal the release of thick, dark smoke due to the plant’s use of heavy fuel oil, exacerbating air pollution in surrounding areas. This situation has heightened concerns regarding its impact on the health of citizens and the environment.

According to published reports, smoke from the Ramin Power Plant is being released into the skies of Ahwaz and its surroundings, despite the city and its neighboring regions facing multiple environmental crises and air pollution in recent years. The emission of pollutants from heavy fuels can adversely affect the health of residents and the local ecosystem, including the Karun River basin.

The persistence of this situation, coupled with a lack of transparency regarding pollution levels and effective oversight of the plant’s operations, has intensified worries about the long-term consequences for the residents of Ahwaz.

The Karoon Human Rights Organization condemns the use of polluting fuels and the disregard for the health of the people and the environment in the region. It calls on provincial and national authorities to halt the use of heavy fuel oil at the Ramin Power Plant, transparently publish the results of environmental monitoring and pollution levels, and take immediate action to protect the health of citizens and the environment in Ahwaz.
