“Ehsan Afreshteh” and “Mehdi Farid”, two political prisoners sentenced to death on charges of “spying for Israel,” are now facing an increased risk of imminent execution following recent transfers. According to the Hengaw Human Rights Organization, both prisoners are currently in serious danger of having their sentences carried out.
On Monday, 19 Aban 1404 (10 November 2025), Ehsan Afreshteh, a 31-year-old political prisoner and civil engineering graduate, was transferred from the public ward of Evin Prison to the security Ward 241 after security forces intervened.
Mehdi Farid, a 48-year-old from Arak and a former employee of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, was transferred from Evin Prison to Ghezel Hesar Prison on Thursday, 15 Aban 1404 (6 November 2025).
Reports indicate that when Evin Prison guards entered Ward 7 to transfer Afreshteh to Ghezel Hesar, they encountered strong resistance from prisoners. Following the confrontation, Afreshteh was moved the same day to one of the internal security wards within Evin instead.
Meanwhile, a group of female political prisoners in Evin issued a letter warning about the imminent risk of execution for the two men, saying that remaining silent in the face of such circumstances would be irresponsible. They emphasized that the government is increasingly unable to manage crises, and its attempts to project power are becoming less credible each day.
Earlier this year, Afreshteh was sentenced to death by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court under Judge Abolghasem Salavati. The sentence was upheld during the appeal stage and the first judicial review by the Supreme Court. His case is now in the process of a second request for retrial.
