According to reports received by the Karun Human Rights Organization, Hassan Afzali, an Arab Ahwazi political prisoner and one of those detained in the aftermath of the twelve-day Iran–Israel war, launched a hunger strike on Sunday, December 14, in protest against the prolonged uncertainty surrounding his case and the continuation of his temporary detention order. He was released on Tuesday, December 16, after bail was set at 5 billion rials.
Informed sources stated that Afzali was tried via video conference, after which the court issued a bail order. Afzali, who had been held for more than five months in Ward 5 of Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz on charges of alleged cooperation with Israel, undertook the hunger strike in an effort to draw the attention of prison authorities and judicial officials to his legal situation.
On Sunday, the Karun Human Rights Organization reported that prison officials had been unable to persuade Afzali to end his hunger strike.
Previously, Karun had documented that following mass arrests after the twelve-day war, at least 80 detainees were transferred to Wards 5 and 8 of Sheiban Prison in Ahwaz. Many of these individuals were reportedly subjected to physical and psychological torture and coerced into making forced confessions, which later resulted in the issuance of heavy prison sentences.
