In the early hours of Wednesday, 5 Azar 1404 (26 November 2025), Maher Sowari, 23, son of Habib and a resident of Hamzeh Township in Quneitra County (Dezful), died by suicide in his family home—just hours before his wedding ceremony was scheduled to take place.
According to relatives, severe economic pressure, unemployment, and his inability to cover the expenses of marriage and starting a new life were the primary causes that pushed him toward this tragic decision. Maher was reportedly set to visit a beauty salon with his bride on Thursday morning, 6 Azar (27 November 2025), followed by the wedding celebrationlater that day.
Before his death, he left a short note that read:
“I have no problem with anyone, and no one has a problem with me; my only problem is with myself.”
Second Suicide on the Same Day
Earlier that same day, Wednesday, 5 Azar 1404 (26 November 2025), around 4 pm, Zowad Naseri (Abdulhossein al-Mo’atouq Al-Jubour), an Ahwazi Arab resident of Ghezawieh Bozorg, located 10 km from Ahwaz, died by suicide due to severe poverty, long-term unemployment, and his inability to provide for the living expenses of his family.
So far in 2025, at least nine cases of suicide or self-immolation connected to economic hardship and unemployment have been documented in Ahwaz and surrounding areas—in addition to dozens of unreported cases, according to human-rights activists.
Today, the Sowari family, Maher’s young bride, and the residents of Hamzeh Township are grieving in deep shock and sorrow.
These two tragedies occurring on the same day serve as a stark warning of the intensifying economic crisis, growing hopelessness, and severe psychological strain affecting young people across the Ahwaz region.
